Langkawi Island is a cluster of 99 islands with 487 square kilometer in size, located around 30 Kilometer off coast of Kedah (North Malaysia) and close to South Thailand. The entire cluster of islands covers an area of 47,850 hectares. Of the 99 islands in the group, only Pulau Tuba, Pulau Singa, Pulau Dayang Bunting, and Pulau Langkawi are inhabited.
Although the island is a tourism place, it only has a small population of around 62 thousand people, and most of the islanders are farmers and fishermen who live in villages that dotted around the countryside.
Like most of the famous places in the world, Langkawi has a beautiful legend too – the legend of a lady called Mahsuri who made a curse upon the island for 7 generations: There Shall Be No Peace And Prosperity On This Island For A Period Of Seven Generations. This legend is known by everyone who lives in this region and most of them still believe in it. It is never difficult to reach Langkawi, either by flight or by sea. There are daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi International Airport at Padang Matsirat, which will take approximately 55 minutes. Ferries take around 1 ½ hour from Kuala Kedah and 45 minutes from Kuala Perlis to reach the island. The ferries services are available started from 7am until 6pm.
